Using Essential Oils: Peppermint Oil

Everyday Uses for Peppermint Oil

Last week I talked about lavender oil. Next up on the list of oils I've experimented with is peppermint oil! This is the oil I use the most after lavender oil. There are many qualities it's known for, so I wanted to test a few of the most important qualities out for myself!

A) ~ 20 drops of Peppermint Oil (PO) + ORS Olive Oil Creamy Aloe Shampoo/Replinishing Conditioner = stimulating shampoo and conditioner

So, let's talk about what happened here. When I first tried this concoction I measured the shampoo and conditioner and put them into two separate containers. Then I added about 5 drops of oil to each container. I got halfway through my wash and conditioning before realizing I didn't have enough shampoo or conditioner! To prevent this from happening in the future, I added the oil straight to the bottles for the second trial. This worked great the first time around. My scalp was tingling from the oil and all was well! However, every use after that hasn't had the same effect. I'm sure the strength of the shampoo and conditioner has eaten away at the oil, diluting it, which has in turn cut its effectiveness. Once I got down to the bottom of both the shampoo and conditioner, I added a few more drops to see if this would rejuvenate the original oil that was there AND it did not. When I buy these next bottles of shampoo and conditioner, I will go back to my container method.

B) Sniff peppermint oil straight from the bottle = migraine relief

After trying the lavender headache massage oil with no relief, I went to plan B! One of my Twitter followers actually recommended that I try sniffing peppermint oil. To be honest, I didn't think it would work well, but I was wrong! I sniffed the peppermint oil for a few minutes in the morning, which relieved some of the headache pressure. I took the bottle with me and, throughout the day, would sniff the oil when I felt the migraine pressure trying to come back. Eventually the headache disappeared!

Other ways I used this was by pouring a few drops on a tissue and laying it around me so the aroma could float up to my nose and I put the tissue in the car vents. This worked wonders for me, especially with the heat!

I really want to use this oil more than I have. There are many health benefits of peppermint oil (to include aid in digestion, dental care, nausea, stress, etc.). The benefit that sticks out most for me is headache relief! So I really want to do more research around best ways to use this oil for that so I can figure out how this oil can help me with the headaches I've had such a longstanding problem with!

How are you using peppermint oil?
