My Naturalversary

3 Years Natural

natural hairstyles for January through July
Hairstyles from the 1st half of the year
It's already been another year. Does it feel like it?? YES! I know I've said this many times over the past few weeks, but I've been through the wringer this year with my hair. In last year's Naturalversary post, I had a few updates then, let's see where I stand on those now:
  1. I didn't do length checks every other month like I was supposed to. After the year rolled in, I decided to try and get proactive about my damaged hair. I tried different styles like flexi rods and heatless curls, then I revamped those styles when they got old. That worked for me until...

April curlBOX & Product Review

Pantene Defining Curls Styling Custard

April's curlBOX came while I'm at an impasse with my hair. I started going to the salon and found out that the stylist I chose works more comfortably with straight hair, so now I'm not as encouraged to go. My two weeks would have been Easter weekend but now I'm starting to feel like every two weeks might be too frequent.

That's definitely a conversation for another time, so let's get to this curlBOX. The items included in this month's curlBOX were full size Pantene Pro-V products. They include:
~ Curly Hair Series Moisturizer + Styler, No Crunch Curls Whip
~ Defining Curls Styling Custard
~ 2 Minute Moisture Hair Masque Deep Conditioner
~ Stylers Heat Protection Spray
~ Truly Natural Hair Shine Serum
~ Expert Collection Keragloss Oil Mist

Coming into this experiment, I was worried about using Pantene products. I've heard a lot of naturals talk about how Pantene's natural hair products weren't for them BUT everyone's hair is different, so I wasn't going to let what I heard form my opinions. I needed to try them out myself!! Out of the items listed, I decided to try out the Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural Hair Defining Curls Styling Custard first...to hold me over until my next hair wash. I got flexi rods the last time I went to the salon, so I decided to use my revamp method to preserve the look. I followed a very similar method this time around.

I didn't want to invest too much time into revamping the hairstyle because I knew it would only be temporary. I separated my hair into medium sized sections; used a water bottle to dampen each section, applied the custard, then twisted each section.

I loved the results. If I had to compare these results to anything I've used before I would say it reminds me the most of Design Essentials Natural Defining Creme Gel. The custard was light weight, it smelled nice, and there were no flakes after a few days! I will definitely use this product in the future!

The results!

Don't mind my mean mug! It was the best picture of my hair!!
Have a great day y'all!!

Flexi Rods...AGAIN!

Salon Flexi-Rod Set

I know, I know. I've been doing flexi rods since January y'all, but listen...

I was hesitant about going back to the salon after two weeks, because I knew I could pull off wearing my hair straight for another week. I ended up making myself go because I knew with softball practice every week my hair wasn't going to go another week! I also wanted to get this salon visit out of the way and get myself used to going to the salon every 2 weeks again.

I texted my cosmetologist and told her I had no idea what I wanted done to my head, which is most often the case. Somehow during the conversation, it's revealed that to me (from my understanding) that she only works with straight natural hair. Duhn, duhn, DUHN!!!! Oh No (I'm thinking to myself)!!! I went through all the work of finding somewhere to get my hair done and now this! I'd already made my appointment for Saturday, so I told her I would keep it, but I also told her we would have to discuss a different kind of schedule than every two weeks because I usually don't straighten my hair more than about once every 3 months.

Saturday gets here and I'm like Tammy, NO!! We talked a bit and she told me that she was trying to say she prefers to work with more tame hair when she's curling it...not that she only works with straight hair. She also said that my hair was too soft for some of the other styles and if she gave me a style she wanted it to last. I definitely get that, because I'm paying my hard earned money...I want it to last too! But that's just the nature of my hair. I've had  flat twist styles, and updos, and whatever else. The longest my hair is lasting is a good week. My hair is very soft and it is naturally frizzy. Period. So she ended up suggesting I try another girl in the shop who does more of the natural hairstyles I was looking for. I'm thinking about going to her the next go round...so, I may find myself giving her a try sooner rather than later.

These are the results. As you can see from the pic above, the curls are definitely popping!! If I sit under the dryer, my hair will hold on to a curl for dear life!! But, if you guys know me, you know I like length, so I'm only tolerable of this style.

I know what you're thinking. Why would I get this style if I like length? Well, as I mentioned, I didn't know what kind of style I wanted. I'm very particular about hairstyles, so I'm not one to say to a cosmetologist "do whatever you want!". That's taking it a bit far. So I stick with what I know. This style is kind of like a protective style because I don't have to comb my hair, I can oil my scalp, and I don't have to prep it at night.

In the pic to the left, I have a headband on. My hope is that the headband will stretch the curls without damaging them. My hair gets super frizzy...extremely quickly. If I wanted to, I think it could pull this look off for two weeks. I've been coming up with plans for how I can hold the curls but stretch them at the same time. I'm going to try and be creative with styles first, so we'll see how that goes.

So, what are you guys thinking? Flexi rods...or no?!

A Different Flexi Rod Set

Modified Flexi Rod Set

Hi guys!! If you hadn't noticed, I had to take a blog break. I was actually very off the grid this past week (not really on too many social media sites and not really answering and returning phone calls like that) but I'm back now and I have a lot of goodies for you!

Today's post will showcase my modified flexi rod set. As you all know, I recently did a flexi rod set (see here). It turned out well, for the most part, but I had issues with moisture and curl retention. I decided to troll YouTube for different ways to execute the hairstyle and I came across this video. I liked the twist style she used and the size of the flexi rods, so I decided to start with changing those two things first.

First of all, I followed the same wash routine I usually go through. The only difference was the new conditioner I received in my February curlBOX (see here). I can't wait to try that product again; it did a great job on my hair!! Now, when I say twist style, I'm referring to how she treated the hair as she wrapped it around the flexi rods. I imitated this style by smoothing the products into my hair in a way that sort of smoothed the hair down as much as possible. I tightly wrapped the sections of hair around each flexi rod until I was complete. Here's what that looked like:

After completing this, I slept in the flexi rods overnight. I then unwrapped my hair from the rods (keeping the hair in curls) and pin curled each curl in place for a night. Here's what the unwrapped curls looked like:

After pin curling these curls and sleeping on them for a night, I was ready to take the curls down. I don't know what I was expecting to be different between this flexi rod set and the last flexi rod set but there really was none. This size of these flexi rods were 7/8 inches in diameter. The blue rods were 1/2 an inch (or 4/8 inches for comparison purposes).

It's not a bad thing that there wasn't much difference between the two sets, mind you, but I need more!! The finished results are below.

Lightened pic to see curls
Even with the change in conditioner, I've noticed that my hair always comes out really dry. I think I don't put as much product in my hair after washing it, because I just washed it!! Lol. I know the products aren't going to do anything but build up on my hair over the two weeks, so the slower I can make that happen the better. No matter how much or what kind of moisturizer I use, it doesn't help. The last time I washed my hair and it came out dry, I discovered that EVCO (extra virgin coconut oil) was my solution. I decided to start using EVCO at the halfway mark. The oil is so oily that I don't need much but my scalp was very dry and itchy this time around so I ended up oiling my whole scalp!

As far as the heatless curl technique goes...it has its ups and downs. I like that I don't have to sit under a dryer and that I'm not subjecting my hair to heat. The downside is the frizzy look I get. Whenever I got my hair curled or put on flexi rods at the salon, the look came out very polished. My cosme was able to brush wrap the curls, comb them out, and they would pop right back. I wish I would try to comb these heatless curls! Lol.

Everything I do is a work in progress, but I'm hanging in there. I happen to have a few updates about my salon adventures in DC which I was going to include in this post, but I've decided to separate that into it's own post.

SO...look forward to that!!

Have a great start to your week (as I enjoy yet another snow day:-)!

P.S. - Don't forget to come back on Thursday, March 20th to enter the Spring Break Cash Giveaway!! Definitely be on the lookout for that! Also, if you're interested in being a co-host or contributor you have until tomorrow night to enter! There's great opportunities here for everyone!!

Heatless Curls

Using Flexi Rods

I'm back!! I had to take a little break but I'm back to share another hairstyle with you guys.

I finally got around to trying this heatless curl/flexi rod technique using this YouTube video (How To: Flexi-Rod Tutorial for perfect heat less curls). I talked about this technique in my Revamping An Old Hairstyle post, but when I used it there my hair wasn't freshly washed hair and I had also twisted my hair before using the flexi rods. From top to bottom the picture on the right shows my hair at each stage:
  1. Pic one is my pre-wash hair
  2. Freshly washed hair
  3. My hair is detangled; pre deep conditioner
  4. My hair after washing out the deep conditioner
  5. My hair after using the heatless curl technique

First, let me point out that my left side is thicker than my right. I try to hide it with different hairstyles, but the difference is still noticeable at times. I must also admit that the heatless curl method was very hard to do at first. I wanted to roll my hair up so that when each rod was unrolled the curl would fall in the direction I wanted it to fall in. The curls in the back were much harder to get to, but after a while, I got the hang of it!!

These pictures show how my hair looked as it fell. The first picture was about two days later and the second picture is about five days later.

The last time I used flexi rods, I ended up with a frizzy look. This time I followed my normal wash day routine, except I used Design Essentials Compositions Foaming Wrap Lotion. I liked the style more as it fell, but it was really dry. I attribute the dryness to the wrap lotion because my hair has never been that dry after styling. I ended up spraying my hair with water as I twisted it one night and locked the moisture in with coconut oil. That seemed to get the job done.

Have you ladies tried any heatless techniques?
Have you had to battle with the frizziness?
How do you use to combat frizziness?

In other news, my curlBOX came...but they sent it to my NC address!! I got it forwarded this weekend, but I still haven't received it yet. I'm hoping to get it soon so I can try some of the products out and blog about them!! Keep your eyes open for that.

Also, I've created a page for all my hair posts. It's so much easier to lead people to my 'hair page' than to have them search through my year's worth of posts!! Click on the tab above or CLICK HERE! Tell me what you think about it!!
Have a great week you guys!!

Revamping An Old Hairstyle

Flexi Rods Refurbished!

Remember my Flexi Rod Set post from last week?? In that post I revealed that I tried something new during my most recent wash day. The results yielded a very nice look that I got many compliments on but too much frizz for my taste. I was determined to make this style last longer than a few days because I never wash my hair before the 2 week mark!

a flexi rod set that a few days oldHere's a look at a before picture.

So, with my head looking like this (I mean, of course I had it pinned up so you couldn't tell it looked this rough), I began my extensive research on YouTube.

One problem I have with YouTube is I have a hard time finding YouTubers with hair like mine (with the same texture but specifically with the same length of hair as I have for the styles I'm trying to achieve). For example, I've tried to find quick protective styles with no luck. Most of the natural hair YouTubers I subscribe to are ladies with curlier patterns and longer hair...so most of the styles they show don't look quite the same on me. I would love to see more ladies with hair like mine...but that's another story for another day (unless you happen to know some, then please share)!

This time I got lucky! I happened to find two videos I could use for my revamp so I was ecstatic! The first video I found was Flexi-Rod Revamp. The finished look this Youtuber achieved fell right along the lines of what I was looking for. I still wanted to keep my spiral curls but I needed to tighten up the style so there wasn't as much frizz showing.

Flexi Rod Set

Flexi rods on transitioning hair
Flexi Rods on transitioning hair

A New Hairstyle for Wash Day

I finally caved and washed my hair. Instead of doing the regular twist out, I decided to try something different.

I bought a set of flexi rods when I was transitioning. I had gotten to the point where I couldn't wear my hair straight anymore because my roots were taking over! The thing is, I only used the flexi rods one time but the results were great!! Here's what it looked like....

Nice, right?!? I didn't know half the stuff then that I know now, so I figured why not give this another whirl. I couldn't quite remember what products I used during that time so I had to pick products I thought worked best for me now. The products I used were:
Products I used on my natural hair for a flexi rod set.
  • Design Essentials Curl Cleanser Shampoo
  • Beautiful Textures Rapid Repair Deep Conditioner
  • It's a 10 Miracle Leave-In Plus Keratin
  • Influance Natural Oil
  • Beautiful Textures Moisture Butter
  • Design Essentials Defining Creme Gel
My natural hair rolled in flexi rodsI used the same formula for wash days as I normally do (see here for pics) except when it was time to twist my hair, I put in flexi rods. Before rolling, I sprayed each section of hair with the leave-in conditioner, followed by a little oil, then creme gel. Next, I wrapped each section of hair around a flexi rod until my whole head was complete. As I was putting the rods in, I could tell I probably should have used setting lotion. Since I'd just washed my hair, I didn't want to use too many products. I wanted to make sure I wouldn't have to wash my hair before hitting my 2 week mark for hair washing.

The final results of the flexi rod set on my natural hairHere's the finished product! Overall, I think it turned out great. The only problem I had was that it wasn't as polished as it could have been. It was very frizzy and didn't last as long as I know it can. It was also very dry. I tried to put moisturizer in, but it was hard to do that without making it more frizzy than it already was. For the amount of time I kept the style, it looked good!

The next hair post I'll be doing is I did was about what I did to revamp this rod set after it got too out of control (frizz-wise).

What do you guys think??

PLUS

The days for the Valentine's Day Cash Giveaway are winding down people!! There are FIVE DAYS left!! If you haven't entered, what are you doing?!?!? :-)

Boring Straight Hair

I had my hair straightened for my Naturalversary. For the last two weeks my hair has been straight...and it was VERY cute to start with, but after about a week (and after my boyfriend saw it), I was ready to call the straight hair thing quits!!

This past weekend I wanted to wash my hair sooo bad but I convinced myself not to because there was no point. I knew I'd be getting my hair done Tuesday, so I felt it would a waste of my good products!!

Pinterest Pic
of Comb Coils
I'm going to start calling my salon day Dilemma Tuesday. I never know what I want to get done to my hair...it's become quite ridiculous! This time I had it narrowed down to two styles. I knew I either wanted comb coils or a flexi rod set. I was originally going to get the comb coils. I hadn't seen a finished product of the coils in person, but I saw one picture on Pinterest that convinced me that it would be a good look for me.

One: this picture is a deceptive because this lady has WAY more hair than I do! Two: this picture is a deceptive because her hair is a reddish color. For those that know me or may have been following my hair journey, you know I had red hair for about 7 years.

I LOVED MY RED HAIR. When I decided to get red hair, I was trying to be like my Mom. She started rinsing her hair with a deep purple color when I was in high school. A few years later, I was in college and craving a different look. I decided to try this hair rinse. Since I didn't want to be exactly like her, with the purple, I chose Ruby Red. If you read this, you know red is my favorite color! I rinsed my hair the whole time I was in college and it was extremely gorgeous. I didn't realize how much I loved it until I got used to it. There were two occasions when I stopped rinsing my hair. One was my senior year in college and the other time was during grad school.

Jazzing Ruby Red Hair RinseEach time, I went right back to the red. I felt it gave me flair!! People always commented on my red hair. I like to stand out and having red hair was different. Since my natural hair color is so light, when the rinse was applied it stood out more than it would on someone with darker hair. Rinses are a lighter form of hair dying. Because it's not permanent, the down side is all the run off. If I were to sweat or get my hair wet...or even for the first few days after getting the color redone...red dye would be all over the neck of my shirts, coats, blazers, etc. When I washed my hair at home it was like a bloody scene because the dye would run like crazy!! Anyhow, I digress.

My whole point is I changed my mind about the coils because I didn't think my coils would look as nice as they do in that picture. I went a step further and googled other pictures of comb coils because I know some of those pictures on Pinterest can be very deceiving. I was not pleased with the additional pictures I found. They were not as gorgeous.

SO, because I have an important appointment on Thursday, I didn't want to chance it with a so-so hairdo. I went with the flexi rods.

Sitting under the dryer with flexi rods Every time I try a new style I get so nervous. I like to know how things are going to turn out because I don't like being disappointed, no one does! But I think this turned out pretty well. I went in; got my hair shampooed and conditioned; got my hair set in about 20 minutes; sat under the dryer for what seemed like forever; got the rods taken out and voila! My stylist always compliments my hair and how easy it is to work with. She said that my hair rolled with the rods so well that it was making her job that much easier. She also told me that hair normally grows a half an inch a month, but mine is definitely growing at a much quicker rate...maybe an inch per month! I see my hair every day so I don't feel like it's doing that much growing, but the ladies at the salon say differently than what I think. I guess I'm just craving "hang time" (hair that hangs down from the head).

Flexi Rod CurlsThe curls are extremely cute, but since the style is so new, the curls are still extremely tight.

I know as time goes on the curls will loosen and I will probably like it more then. I guess I just got used to the straight hair hanging around my face and now that it's not it's kinda like...ehh. So, I guess we'll see with time how much truth there is to this fast growing hair statement and to see if my hair will hang a little more.  But for now, I still love, Love, LOVE my hair!!

My First Year Natural

Do You Know What Today Is? It's My Naturalversary!

Natural air in ponytails at the age of 5On January 30, 2012, I was sitting in the salon getting a relaxer and some fresh color put into my hair. A few weeks later, I decided I wanted to give this natural thing a try. My hair story is not much different from other stories, but since it's my Naturalversary, I'll share it.

Historically speaking, I've never had too many problems with my hair; it's been long and healthy MOST of my life. I can't remember being natural as a kid. I have a hand full of pictures, but my hair was always braided or in ponytails, so I don't know what my natural hair looks like at all.
