Oh No She Didn't

Hair Prep for Another Sew-In

hair before getting a sew-in
Pre sew-in hair was on fleek...lol
Why yes, I did!! Remember this post and this post?! This definitely didn't come out of the blue! I said I was going to do it and that's exactly what I did.

This sew-in was different than the last because I went into it having more knowledge about the process. This time around I felt more comfortable. My original plan was to take Hairfinity for at least a month without a sew-in to measure hair growth from the pills alone, but the opportunity presented itself for me to get this sew-in, so I jumped on it. I didn't want to wait until the end of January. I'm trying to have this hair touching my shoulders before the spring! :-)

This sew-in was similar to the last sew-in, but there are key differences which I feel will contribute to me having a better experience with this sew-in. Allow me to elaborate.

When I got my last sew-in, my sister was so inspired she ended up getting a sew-in too. In my opinion, her experience was much better than mine so I was convinced I'd have to go home to get the services I should have gotten in the first place!!

When I got word there were openings for appointments, I called and made one, but I had questions! I wanted to make sure I didn't go through what I went through last time!

This time, I wanted to actually see the hair before I buying it. The shop I went to was The Weave Express in Fayetteville, NC. The stylist who did my hair owns the shop and has a hair shop connected to the weave shop, so it's a one-stop shop. My sister is my weave expert. She knows me, knows what I like, and what I was looking for. She recommended the hair there so I trusted her. My appointment was on a Sunday so I wanted to make sure the shop would be open and that I'd be able to buy the hair when I got there. All this was doable so that was a +1 for me!

The last time I got a sew-in I was completely unprepared. I received no instructions for what to do with my hair or how she expected it to be when I got there. The day came for me to get the sew in and I was more than appalled when she just took my hair out and started braiding it. She didn't wash it or trim it or anything! I was a little upset because I thought she would at least wash it!! That was my first experience with a weave only stylist. This time, I needed specific instructions, so I asked upfront. She simply told me to wash and stretch my hair but that request alone sent me into alarm mode!

If you remember this post, you know the last time I blow dried my hair I completely destroyed it! This is where the journey of my damaged hair started. This is the reason why I'm getting sew-ins now...so I can grow my hair back out after the many trims I've had to get my hair on track.

I told myself this would be different. When I last blow dried my hair I got frustrated with it and ended up harshly pulling and splitting my ends. I had to calm myself down. I've said it before, I'm perfectly capable of doing my hair. Before going natural, I washed and blow dried my hair all the time! Although natural hair is a totally different beast, the concept is the same. It takes patience and I was willing to put the work in because a) I didn't want to mess my hair up, AGAIN, b) I wanted this sew-in, AND c) I want the take down process to be better this time around.

Because I was home and the appointment was very last minute, I didn't have any of the products I needed. I had some Beautiful Textures shampoo laying around but I ended up buying Beautiful Textures conditioner, a Revlon blow dryer (pictured below), and Silk Elements MegaSilk Heat Protection spray. The only time I had available to do my hair was the morning before my appointment. It was a squeeze and I had to rush BUT I also knew I had to take my time.

I washed and conditioned my hair, normally. Then came the hard part.
Blow drying!
I sectioned my hair into small and manageable sections. I oiled and moisturized each section. Next I sprayed each section with heat protectant and blow dried it. I had help with the blow drying because I needed to make sure I was very careful when stretching each section. To stretch my hair, I concentrated the blow dryer on each section of hair as I pulled it through the brush/comb and I made sure to be careful with my around the ends of my hair.

I successfully blow dried and stretched my hair out enough so it could easily be braided. Since I was in a rush, I barely finished with enough time to get to my appointment so unfortunately, I have no pictures! (I vow to do better with pictures this year). But the hard part was done!

STAY TUNED to see the results!

Have you ever been afraid to get back on your hair after you've done something to hurt it?? How'd you get over it?
